Ex-Labour councillor in Shrewsbury joins Liberal Democrats6.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 17th Mar 2005 Shrewsbury and Atcham PPC, Richard Burt last week welcomed ex-Labour councillor, John Roberts to the Party in the lead up to a borough by-election in Sutton and Reabrook - a ward he used to represent! John, who was in the Labour Party for 20 years, will campaign on behalf of our candidate, Caroline Cheyne, and stand for the Liberal Democrats in the Sutton and Reabrook County Division on May 5th. John left the Labour Party through deep disillusionment over Tony Blair's war in Iraq, where his son spent a year serving in the armed forces. Richard Burt Shrewsbury and Atcham's Liberal Democrat Candidate said "John is very active in his community and is a committed campaigner. We are delighted to welcome him to the Party. This is another deeply damaging blow to Labour in Shrewsbury in the run up to the general election, where it will be a close fight between us and the Tories."
